It does soak up 1.5 stops of light but that is often worth it when it comes to shooting small birds! I still carry the 1.4x but don’t really bother with the 2x anymore, I still use it on occasion but due to the 2 stops of light lost prefer the 1.7x.

Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17eII

When I cannot get physically close enough to my subjects I generally reach for Nikons TC-17e, a 1.7x teleconverter. It does soak up 1.5 stops of light but that is often worth it when it comes to shooting small birds!
